Kevin Allen Named Winner of James V. Madary Memorial Award

It’s hard to imagine 2020 getting off to a better start for JVM Regional Service Manager Kevin Allen.

In early February, the diehard Kansas City Chiefs fan watched his beloved team claim its first Super Bowl victory in 50 years.

And in January, Allen won the 13th annual James V. Madary Memorial Award. The honor – named for JVM’s late founder – is bestowed upon an associate who displays an “exceptional work ethic, dependability, loyalty, and teamwork.”

“I cried tears of joy,” Allen said of his reaction to winning the award. “Knowing how much I’ve put into my career and trying to help others along my journey, it’s amazing to be recognized for that. It’s very humbling to receive this.”

In his speech announcing Allen’s honor at JVM’s annual banquet in Kansas City, President and CEO Jay Madary lauded his relentless work ethic and willingness to help co-workers.

Allen “emulates the fundamentals of JVM better than anyone in the company,” he said. “Many of our technicians and supervisors are here because of this man, and he has an eye and a passion for recruiting quality people. He lends a hand to all and never says, ‘No.’”

Getting Started

A native of Kansas City, Allen got bit by the multifamily bug early. He worked as a groundskeeper at local apartment communities during summers in high school and began working full time as a multifamily maintenance tech in the late 1990s.

He was with Camden Property Trust in 2013 when the operator exited the Kansas City market. His ensuing job search brought him to JVM, and he joined the company as a service supervisor at the Riverstone apartment community.

“I was looking for a situation where my values would align with the company’s, and that’s what I found with JVM,” Allen said. “It was one of the best situations I could have ever imagined finding. I knew I had found a place that I wanted to be a part of, with the kind of family-like environment in which you can really grow.”

And Allen has grown at JVM. After several promotions, he’s now in a role in which he oversees JVM’s maintenance teams in the Kansas City area. He has a wide array of responsibilities, from managing the onboarding of new hires to monitoring and evaluating the maintenance teams’ KPIs.

“I would say probably one of the biggest responsibilities is just to be a resource for the teams and help them with troubleshooting the challenges or roadblocks they face at their communities on a daily basis,” he said.

A Perfect Fit

When he’s not at work, Allen enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife, Courtney, have two children: 14-year-old Peyton and 7-year-old Natalie. Allen’s hobbies include fishing, boating – “basically anything around the water” – and avidly following the Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, and the University of Missouri football and basketball teams.

Looking ahead, Allen sees many happy years with JVM, where he says he’s found a perfect fit.

“We all have a sense of ownership within JVM,” he said. “We all share common goals to be the best place to work. We live by our fundamentals and the culture we’ve created. Most importantly, we have a lot of fun doing what we do. We realize that in life, you don’t have to always be so serious all the time, that you’ve got to enjoy what you do to be happy.”
